Tetsworth Primary School Writing
Intent
At Tetsworth Primary School, we aim to develop confident, fluent, and creative writers who take pride in their work. Our writing curriculum focuses on teaching the fundamentals of writing, ensuring that every child, regardless of age or ability, secures the key skills they need to communicate effectively.
We value quality over quantity, believing that strong writing begins with getting the basics right. In our mixed-age classes, we build pupils’ knowledge and skills systematically, ensuring progression and consistency as they move through the school. Our intent is to equip every child with secure foundations in handwriting, spelling, grammar, and sentence construction, so that they can write with clarity, accuracy, and confidence across all subjects.
Implementation
Writing at Tetsworth is taught through a structured and progressive framework that places explicit teaching of writing skills at its heart. Lessons are carefully planned to include:
-
Direct and explicit teaching of handwriting, spelling, and grammar.
-
Modelling and guided practice, so pupils clearly understand what high-quality writing looks like.
-
Opportunities for regular practice and application of skills in meaningful contexts.
-
Careful differentiation, ensuring all children in mixed-age classes are appropriately challenged and supported.
Teachers model the writing process, demonstrating how to plan, draft, edit, and improve work. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their writing and take ownership of their progress. High expectations for presentation and accuracy are consistent across all children.
Impact
Through this approach, pupils at Tetsworth Primary School develop as confident, capable, and enthusiastic writers. They demonstrate:
-
Fluency and accuracy in handwriting and spelling.
-
A secure understanding of grammar and sentence structure.
-
The ability to express ideas clearly, creatively, and purposefully.
-
Pride in their written work and awareness of the importance of quality.
Progress is evident in pupils’ books, classroom outcomes, and their growing independence as writers. By focusing on the fundamentals and providing consistent, high-quality teaching, all pupils—whatever their starting point—achieve success and develop a lifelong love of writing.
